What The FDA Says About Supplements

E-mail Print

There is solid scientific evidence that shows the effectiveness of 3 substances in supporting cardiovascular functions. These substances are plant sterols or "phytosterols", long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and certain B-vitamins such as Vitamin B6, B12 and folate. Phytosterols often come in the form of "phytosterol esters" which means they are linked to fatty acids. This greatly improves their solubility and thus their bioavailability in the gut.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) endorses these 3 supplements
  • Official Health Claim issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for phytosterol-esters:
Foods containing at least 650mg per serving of vegetable oil sterol esters ["Phytosterols"], eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 1.3g, as a part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease .
  • Qualified Health Claim issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA):
Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. One serving of ProLipid provides 0.167 grams of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids .
  • Qualified Health Claim issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid:
It is known that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. The scientific evidence about whether folic acid [folate], Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 may also reduce the risk of heart disease and other vascular diseases is suggestive, but not conclusive. Studies in the general population have generally found that these vitamins lower homocysteine, an amino acid found in the blood. It is not known whether elevated levels of homocysteine may cause vascular disease or whether high homocysteine levels are caused by other factors. Studies that will directly evaluate whether reducing homocysteine may also reduce the risk of vascular disease are not yet complete .
